Today I did my first presentation at a major event, Global Education Conference. This is a week-long conference entirely held online, using Blackboard Collaborate, with sessions all day and all night long, 24/7, from Monday to Thursday. The title of my session was Natural Wonders – Engaging students through global video conferencing about nature. All the participants could understand a little more about this incredible project, and they gave amazing feedback, including suggestions to enhance the project. You can see the set of slides used in the presentation below.
The recording of the entire session can be viewed here.

In June 24th, 2015, I had the privilege of watching the second presentation of Natural Wonders. This time, a class from Ontario, Canada, presented about 5 Natural Wonders of Canada:
1. Bay of Fundy - Nova Scotia
2. Niagara Falls - Ontario
3. Canadian Rockies - Alberta
4. Aurora Borealis - Territories
5. Gros Morne National Park, Newfoundland
And here is the recording.

A big thank you to Ms. Karen Zimmer, these students' wonderful teacher, and to the students themselves that did an amazing job with the presentations.

First Video Conference

Thank you very much to all of you that were there with us in today's presentation. It was an incredible experience for us, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Researching and talking about the natural wonders is awe-inspiring.

This was the first step of a global project that is already taking off. My students presented 3 natural wonders in Brazil - Iguazu Falls, Lençois Maranhenses, and Roraima Mount. We practiced a lot in class and I guess that all the practice reflected in the quality of the presentations. Congratulations to my students, Eduarda, Izabela, and Érika! My teacher-friends and I are very proud of you. None of this would happen you weren't as dedicated as you  are.

Our audience was really supportive. They were educators from the USA (TN, TX,  NC, and IL), from Jordan, and from India. Special thanks to Michael Cunningham, whose work with global video conferences has been inspiring me; to Ruth Valle, who, among many other things, introduced me to Michael and gave me self-confidence; and to Sebastian Panakal, who invited me to the coolest group of educators ever. You all have really inspired me and given me strength to conceive a project this big. Thank you!

If you would like to work with us in this project, feel free to get in touch. Don't worry if your students are on Summer vacations. You can join the project after you resume school. I can't wait to watch presentations from other classes and learn about the natural wonders in your country/region!

Meus alunos apresentaram 3 maravilhas do Brasil: Cataratas do Iguaçu, Lençois Maranhenses, e Monte Roraima. Parabéns a esses alunos, Eduarda, Izabela e Érika.

NATURAL WONDERS – GLOBAL PROJECT

6/2/2015

For those who don’t know me, I am an English teacher from Brazil. I teach small classes of teenagers and adults. If we haven’t connected yet, I hope we do so in a near future.

This year, I started teaching my students about the Natural Wonders of the World, and we all fell in love with our awesome planet. That’s why we thought it would be incredible if we talked about the Natural Wonders that let us amazed. My students are willing to connect with you and/or your class to share some knowledge about our Brazilian Natural Wonders, and we would like to get to know the Wonders in your country too. We can do it either via video conference or recording videos to each other.

Moreover, I would like to add all the videos together in a website/blog, so as to have videos about Natural Wonders from all over the world by the end of 2015. What do you think? Would you like to participate? If so, please, email me at athalorc@gmail.com. Feel free to share this information with people in your PLN.

Our first presentation is going to be this Thursday, June 04th, at 12:00 noon UTC (which is 9 am in Brazil, and 8 am EDT). If you would like to meet our students and attend to our presentation (with or without your students), join us at the link: https://zoom.us/j/170971157 (yeah, you’d have to download Zoom, but it’s totally worth it).

The presentation of each Natural Wonder is supposed to take only 5 minutes. My students have prepared 3 of them, so I guess it won’t take more than 30 minutes (Q&A session included).

Even if you can’t attend to this first presentation, but would like to get involved, contact me, because we would like to have as many videos/presentations as possible, throughout the year.

Thank you very much for all the support.
